The Battle of the BulgeIt was, without any doubt, the greatest American battle of the Second World War and it will, I believe, always be considered a great American victory.– Sir Winston Churchill to the House of Commons, 1945
In December 1944, during the closing months of World War II, a climatic battle was fought in the dark forests of the Ardennes of Belgium and Luxembourg. The hilly region along the German border witnessed some of the war’s most bitter fighting; an epic campaign that would forever be known as The Battle of the Bulge . At its height more than one million soldiers fought and sacrificed for truly collossal stakes. For Hitler, hurling forth secretly hoarded panzer forces, it was a final dramatic gamble to win a war lost-- perhaps to gain time to develop atomic weapons. For the Allies, reeling from total surprise and the greatest failure of military intelligence since Pearl Habor, it was a time to recover and the seize the opportunity to once and forever vanquish Hitler from Western Europe.
